WHAT IS PARENTAL ALIENATION SYNDROME, "PAS" ?

Often shortsighted and abusive mothers will try to turn children against their father. The mentally abused children sometimes develop "Parent Alienation Syndrome." Gordon B. Plumb, Ph. D., Carbondale, Illinois, recently published a book Humanizing Child Custody Disputes, (foreword by Congressman Glenn Poshard). Chapter VIII deals with Parent Alienation Syndrome, defined as:

"a disturbance in which children are preoccupied with depreciation and criticism of a parent; denigration that is unjustified and/or exaggerated."

Furthermore, "Parent Alienation syndrome is caused by the conscious or unconscious acts of one parent brainwashing or programming a child against the other parent and if allowed to continue for over a year, there is a strong likelihood that any meaningful relationship between the child and the "hated" parent is impossible until at least the child becomes an adult. The irony of Parent Alienation Syndrome is that the child's feelings are most often the opposite to what is expressed through Parent Alienation Syndrome and the "preferred" parent is more often feared then preferred." (pp. 71).

Plumb cites Richard Gardner's writings as authority that in cases where one parent is fanatical in their animosity, immediate placement of the child with the "hated" parent is essential to avoid irreparable psychological damage to the child and that it is usually preferable for the "hated" parent to have custody.

Doctor Plumb further recommends no contact between the child and the "preferred" parent from one to a few months to reestablish the bonds between the "hated" parent and the child without interference (pp. 72), and that any telephone contact between the "preferred" parent and the child be supervised while the parents and child undergo professional counseling.

NOTE: some feminists play word games and say no such thing as pas exists. However no on can deny that divorcing parents often alienate their children against the other parent. Whether you call it PAS or just parental alienation is a frivolous, intellectually dishonest argument. Perhaps a better description might be malicious mother syndrome.
